Big Red's "Holy Moses" God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce
Big Red's Hot Sauce introduced me to a concept in hot sauce adventuring that I hadn't anticipated…the idea of multiple "perfects"…the simple notion that a product can be "perfect" even though it is not exactly the same (perhaps similar, but not the same) as other "perfect" products. This epiphany came to me the moment I had my first taste of God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce, the hottest offering from Big Red's "Holy Moses" line of sauces.
The designation of "perfect" for a food product, and for hot sauce in particular is inherently subjective and could encompass a range of variables including; flavor preference, palate sophistication, heat tolerance, cuisine partiality, and so forth. Sometimes it is even as simple as whether or not a hot sauce is perfectly serviceable within the constraints of a given budget. (I'm looking at you, Valentina.)
Over the course of my hot sauce adventures I have come to find a number of "perfect" hot sauces. God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce is certainly among them. The moment it hit my tongue the flavor immediately called to mind a number of dishes for which this sauce would be a perfect fit, the first being tacos. Big Red's God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce is a perfect taco sauce.
Big Red's Hot Sauce is a family-owned company located in Phoenix, Arizona that prides itself in producing sauces featuring "full flavor, with the heat you love", which is to say with Big Red's the flavor comes first. The heat is a bonus for those looking to add a little kick to their meal. At first taste this sauce showcases a blend of habanero and chipotle peppers for a spicy, slightly smoky flair of Tex-Mex cuisine. A hint of lemon juice adds just the right amount of zest to elevate the flavor and provide a lightly acidic accent to a satisfying pepper burn across the tongue.
With the God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce the real kick comes in the form of the Bhut jolokia "Ghost" pepper, errantly touted on Big Red's website as "the world's hottest pepper", a long outdated claim that is unfortunately very common to the industry, and likely intended to appeal to the more daring hot sauce consumer. But if a seasoned hardcore "chili-head" is looking for a scorch factor that tests their metal they may be disappointed by what God's Wrath dishes out. Despite the dire warnings on this product's web page this hot sauce doesn't induce the fist pounding, vein popping endorphin rush to which some of the most ambitious sauce makers aspire. And that is to its benefit because God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce is far more approachable to just about anyone looking for a stronger kick to the teeth than what Frank's Red Hot or Cholula can ever dream of, but not so much heat as to overwhelm the robust flavors Big Red's has packed into every delicious drop. Sprinkle some of this sauce across a taco (just a little for the novice, or more as tolerance allows) and you're likely to enjoy perhaps the most delicious taco you've ever had. And it doesn't stop there. I poured God's Wrath over a platter of sausage, eggs and skillet potatoes at breakfast, hot dogs and salads during lunch, and a variety of different pizzas at dinner. This sauce was a perfect fit every time, and I applaud the folks at Big Red's Hot Sauce for producing a perfectly delicious, perfectly satisfying, perfect sauce. (At current count that makes 12 "perfect"s for God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce in this review alone.)
One added note; if you're looking to purchase this product from Big Red's website, as of this posting I have found what seem to be a number of outdated links. At the bottom of the individual product pages is an "Add to basket" button that routes the browser to a non-functioning "Roman Cart" web store. After many failed purchase attempts I contacted the company and they suggested using the red "Buy Some Big Red's Hot Sauce" banner at the bottom of their main page. This will take you to their current web store from which you can purchase their entire range of sauces in packs of two or more. I mention this because the more expediently you can purchase a bottle of God's Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce the sooner can you enjoy a very delicious and satisfying hot sauce you are sure to love.
